Waymo is preparing to bring its robotaxi service to Singapore. The company announced its plans on September 17, and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority confirmed its entry on September 18. Commercial ride-hailing is a target for 2028, rather than a service passengers can book today.
The road to a launch
Waymo says its initial electric Jaguar I-PACE fleet will arrive in the coming months. Preparation in 2027 will involve specialists driving manually while the company adapts its system to local streets and monsoon conditions.
Its Singapore information page describes a staged process: manual mapping and validation, followed by autonomous driving with specialists behind the wheel, before fully autonomous operations. The company says it will seek the necessary approvals from local authorities.
More than a software rollout
The transport authority says deployments must meet safety and regulatory requirements. It also places the transition for existing drivers alongside the technology rollout, promising retraining and support as autonomous services expand.
Our reading: the revealing part of this announcement is the preparation. Moving autonomous driving into another city requires local validation, operational capacity and public acceptance. A launch target alone does not establish that those steps are complete.
